We are incredibly excited to be receiving our intern, Steve Fisher, in the beginning of January to help us interview, film, and develop our video workshops for three months. We have known Steve for years, and truly value his anthropological background and zest for popular education. He’s also fluent in Spanish, which will come in very handy.
Steve is organizing a fundraiser to pay for his travel and living expenses. All funds he raises beyond these costs will go directly to the Adapting to Scarcity project. Below are the fundraiser details – from what we’ve heard, it’s an event not to be missed. The flier for the event can be downloaded here.

We leave the Bay Area for our cross country adventure on Friday! The past two weeks were chock full of packing up, saying goodbye, and making a few really great connections for our project down the line. It’s sad to leave our home of the past three years, but it’s comforting to know all the support and lasting friendships we have here.

We’ll be hosting another fundraising event on Thursday, August 6th in San Francisco. This one is a lot lower key, thankfully. Tonic Bar, at Polk and Union, hosts guest bartenders from various non profits every Thursday night. All the tips go toward the non profit of the week. Arthur and I went to support Visual Aid’s fundraising night at Tonic last Thursday, and Duncan, the owner, had a slot available right before we leave the Bay Area. Thank you Duncan for fitting us in!

The fundraiser was a success! We are well on our way to raising enough money to purchase film making equipment. It was a warm sunny day and an excellent community of people came out to support. Karolo from International Rivers set up a table full of informational material showcasing all the good work they do. DJ Delgado of Aztlan Roots provided amazing music and set the tone for a great day. Pictures soon to follow! Thank you all for all your donations and support – this is what the grassroots is all about.
The Fundraiser is tomorrow and today is filled with last minute preparations, lots of cooking, and hopefully a bit of relaxing. Pulling an event like this together in this economic climate has been surprisingly full of abundance. There will be a sizeable raffle tomorrow, and the donations I’ve received from friends are incredible. From massage gift certificates and a night at Green Gulch Farm to beautiful art prints, jewelry, and hand crafted bags (and lovely eco-friendly children’s toys!), it’s been wonderfully overwhelming to experience the support and beauty of my network -not to mention all my friends who are cooking amazing dishes today. Thank you all.

Project details began to fall into places this week and I feel incredibly grateful. The Bay Area is a vibrant active community, well networked, with many resources to offer. Reaching out to organizations and like-minded people is relatively easy compared to other places – I’m constantly amazed by how giving people are of their time and energy.

My first major fundraiser will be June 14th at El Rio in San Francisco from 1-3! Thank you El Rio! El Rio is a really awesome community bar that makes it a priority to host fundraisers. My friend Matt is a bartender there, and I was really blown away by the generosity of the owner, Dawn. I’m planning on bringing in a DJ, serving some delicious brunch food, and organizing displays of water issues in the Bay Area and Guadalajara. The intention of the event is to not only raise money for a digital video camera and editing software, but also to raise awareness and build the water network in the Bay Area and in Guadalajara. I hope to hold a raffle with donated prizes, so if anyone has connections with businesses and nonprofits who might be interested in making a donation, please pass on their information or get in touch with me.
